Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is electricity or heat generated from naturally replenishing sources, such as solar, wind, hydro, or biomass, rather than finite fossil fuels.

Definition

Renewable energy refers to power generated from sources that naturally replenish on a human timescale — solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass — as opposed to finite fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. For organisations, renewable energy sourcing can come through on-site generation (solar panels), power purchase agreements (PPAs), or purchasing renewable-backed electricity tariffs from a supplier.

Why It Matters

Renewable energy sourcing directly reduces Scope 2 emissions and is one of the most commonly cited actions in corporate sustainability strategies, though the actual emissions impact depends heavily on how the renewable claim is structured (e.g., certificates versus matched-hour sourcing).

How ecolyptus Helps

ecolyptus's emissions calculations can reflect an organisation's actual energy mix, including renewable sourcing, to give a more accurate Scope 2 figure than a flat grid-average estimate.
