Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is the practice of achieving the same operational output or comfort level while using less energy, typically through equipment upgrades, process changes, or better operational control.

Definition

Energy efficiency refers to reducing the amount of energy required to deliver the same output, service level, or comfort — as opposed to energy conservation, which simply means using less energy overall, sometimes at the expense of output or comfort.

Efficiency improvements can come from equipment upgrades (more efficient HVAC units, LED lighting), operational changes (better scheduling, setpoint optimisation), or structural changes (insulation, building envelope improvements). Efficiency is typically measured against a baseline — the previous consumption pattern under equivalent conditions — which is where Measurement & Verification becomes important for proving that an efficiency intervention actually delivered its expected savings.

Why It Matters

Efficiency improvements are usually the fastest, lowest-risk lever for reducing both energy cost and emissions, since they don't require reducing output or comfort — but without accurate baseline data, it's difficult to prove an efficiency measure actually worked, which undermines both cost justification and compliance reporting.
