Building Energy Management System (BEMS)

A Building Energy Management System (BEMS) combines the equipment control functions of a BMS with dedicated energy monitoring and reporting features, focused specifically on optimising a building's energy performance.

Definition

A Building Energy Management System (BEMS) sits between a traditional BMS and a standalone EMS. It retains the equipment control functions of a BMS — scheduling, setpoint management for HVAC and lighting — but adds a stronger energy monitoring and reporting layer specifically aimed at reducing consumption and cost, rather than purely maintaining comfort and operational settings.

BEMS platforms are often positioned as the "energy-first" version of a BMS: the same underlying control capability, but with consumption trends, efficiency benchmarking, and cost reporting built in as first-class features rather than an afterthought.
